Wet Weather Tyre Guide for 1/8 Buggy — Diamond EVO to Hyperdrive
Posted by RC Pit Box on
Wet weather racing on oiled clay is one of the most challenging tyre decisions in 1/8 buggy. Run the wrong rubber at the wrong time and you'll be fighting the car all day. Get it right and a wet meeting can actually become an advantage — particularly if your competitors are less prepared.
Here's the progression that works on UK oiled clay tracks like Herts and Brookthorpe when conditions change through the day.
Very Wet — VP Pro Diamond EVO M4 (Super Soft)
When the track is properly wet — standing water, soaked clay, no racing line — the VP Pro 814 Diamond EVO M4 is the tyre to be on. Its deep pin tread is designed to displace water and maintain traction on a completely saturated oiled clay surface. It excels in conditions where other tyres simply can't generate consistent grip.
The M4 Super Soft compound is specifically made for very wet, cold conditions. If it's raining and the track is saturated, this is what you want.
Drying Conditions — VP Pro Diamond EVO M3 (Soft)
As the track starts to dry and water begins to clear, it's time to move to the M3 Soft compound. The M3 is designed for damp and drying conditions — it still has the water-clearing capability of the Diamond EVO tread but the slightly harder compound gives better feel and drive as grip levels start to return.
Watch the racing line carefully. When you start to see the clay surface colour change on the line, that's your cue to consider switching.
Dry Line Forming — VP Pro Hyperdrive EVO (MC Clay)
Once the track has dried and a clean, defined racing line has formed, the Diamond EVO has done its job and it's time to move on. This is where the VP Pro 817 Hyperdrive EVO in MC Clay compound comes in.
The Hyperdrive is a bar tyre — a completely different tread style to the pin pattern of the Diamond EVO. On a recovering oiled clay surface with a clean line, the Hyperdrive's connected bar tread generates excellent forward bite and gives the car a much more planted, confident feel than a wet tyre on a drying surface.
It's a similar character to the Hot Race Sahara Clay on a recovered track — if conditions continue to improve through finals, both are strong choices.

The Full Progression on Race Day
- Saturated, very wet track: Diamond EVO M4 Super Soft
- Damp and drying, line starting to appear: Diamond EVO M3 Soft
- Dry with a clean racing line: Hyperdrive EVO MC Clay (or Hot Race Sahara Clay)
Practical Tips
- Always glue a set of wet tyres before a race weekend if rain is forecast — you won't have time to glue them in the pits when the heavens open
- Keep an eye on the conditions between qualifying heats — the track can change dramatically within an hour on a mixed day
- If in doubt, the M3 is a safer middle ground than the M4 — it handles a wider range of damp conditions without being as compromised when things dry out
Check the Forecast Before You Go
Our Find Your Tyre wizard checks the live Met Office forecast for your specific track and flags wet conditions automatically, recommending the Diamond EVO M3 or M4 based on the predicted rainfall. It covers Herts, Brookthorpe, NWN, Slough and Shrewsbury.
The Diamond EVO and Hyperdrive EVO are both in stock at RC Pit Box with UK next-day delivery.
