Hot Race Sahara vs Napoli — What's the Difference?
Posted by RC Pit Box on
Hot Race now produce two high-traction 1/8 buggy tyres for oiled clay and high-grip outdoor circuits: the long-established Sahara, and the newer Napoli. Both share the same compound range, but the tread patterns differ. Here's what you need to know.
The Sahara
The Sahara has been the leading oiled clay tyre in the UK since Hot Race launched it in 2017. Its connected bar-and-pin tread pattern generates massive forward bite and excellent steering response on oiled and clay surfaces. It's the benchmark — and the most popular 1/8 buggy tyre at UK outdoor oiled clay venues like Herts and Brookthorpe.
The Napoli
The Napoli is Hot Race's alternative oiled clay tyre, designed around the same compound range as the Sahara but with a slightly different tread pattern. It tends to generate a bit more rotation and can give a different feel through corners. Some drivers prefer it on very high-traction surfaces where the Sahara can occasionally feel too planted.
Which Should You Choose?
Both tyres are available in the same six compounds (SS, Soft, Medium, Clay, Clay Hard, White), so compound selection works identically for both. Practical advice from UK club level racing:
- Start with the Sahara — it's the proven choice and is well understood by most UK drivers
- Run the Napoli alongside it on race day — glue up a set of each in the same compound and compare. Many drivers find one works better on a particular circuit on a particular day
- The difference is subtle — if you're a club-level racer rather than a national-level competitor, you won't go wrong with either
Compound Selection (Same for Both)
- White / Super Soft: Cold conditions, very high-traction oiled surfaces in winter
- Soft: Cool to mild oiled clay and high-grip outdoor (10–18°C)
- Medium: Moderate temperatures, packed oiled clay (18–24°C)
- Clay: Warm conditions, summer club racing on oiled clay (20°C+)
- Clay Hard: Very hot summer conditions (28°C+)
