Pre-Glued vs Tyre Only — Which Should You Choose for 1/8 Buggy?

Posted by RC Pit Box on

When you're buying 1/8 buggy tyres, one of the first decisions you'll face is whether to go pre-glued or tyre only. Both have genuine advantages — it comes down to your experience level, how much you race, and how much control you want over your setup.

Pre-Glued — Just Bolt On and Go

Pre-glued tyres come ready mounted on wheels, fully glued and ready to fit straight to the car. You simply bolt them on and you're racing. For newer drivers or anyone who doesn't want to spend time in the pits gluing, pre-glued is a brilliant option.

There's no mess, no drying time, no risk of getting it wrong. If you're heading to a race weekend and want to keep things simple, pre-glued removes one more thing to think about.

RC Pit Box stocks GRP pre-glued tyres in Flexy, Triky and Micro patterns, all mounted on white GRP wheels and available in all four compounds.

Tyre Only — More Control, Lower Running Costs

Buying tyre-only and gluing them yourself is the preferred approach for most experienced club racers and all serious competitors. Here's why.

You Trust Your Own Work

If you've glued your own tyres, you know exactly what's gone into them. Pre-glued tyres these days are very reliable and it's rare for them to come apart — but it has been known. When you've done the gluing yourself, you only have yourself to blame if something goes wrong, and that peace of mind matters when you're pushing hard in a final.

Lower Running Costs Through Insert Re-Use

This is the big one for regular racers. When you glue tyre-only, you're reusing your existing foam inserts. A good set of inserts can be reused three or four times before they need replacing — meaning you only need to buy fresh tyres and wheels each time, not a full pre-glued set.

Over a season, this adds up to a significant saving. And here's something many drivers find: inserts that have been used once or twice can actually feel better than a brand new set in certain conditions, as the foam breaks in and conforms more naturally to the tyre.

Insert Modifications

This is where tyre-only really comes into its own for the more technically-minded racer. When you're gluing your own, you have full control over the insert setup — and there are two modifications worth knowing about.

Softening the insert: Punching holes through the foam insert reduces its stiffness, creating a softer feel underfoot. Some drivers do this to find a more compliant, planted feeling on certain surfaces — particularly high-grip oiled clay where a softer insert can improve traction.

Gluing inserts to the rim: When running a very soft tyre compound at high speed, the tyre can balloon outward under centrifugal force, changing its shape and affecting handling. Gluing the insert to the inner rim prevents this, keeping the tyre profile consistent. This is a technique used by experienced drivers in specific conditions and is simply not possible with pre-glued tyres.

Which Should You Choose?

  • New to the hobby or occasional racer: Pre-glued is ideal. Simple, reliable, no mess.
  • Regular club racer: Tyre only will save you money over a season and gives you more control.
  • Competitive or national-level racer: Tyre only every time — the ability to modify inserts and the confidence of doing your own gluing is worth the extra effort.
