Pivot Ball vs C-Hub Front Suspension on 1/8 Off-Road Buggies: What's the Difference?
Posted by RC Pit Box on
Look at the front corner of any 1/8 off-road buggy and you'll find one of two designs holding the wheel to the car: pivot ball suspension (also called PBS, pillow ball or pillar ball) or a C-hub. Both do the same job. They let the wheel move up and down over the track and turn for steering. They just go about it in different ways.
We stock one of each. The WIRC SBX4 runs pivot balls and the Sparko F8SE 26 runs C-hubs. Here's how they compare.
How pivot ball suspension works
On a pivot ball car, the front upright sits between the upper and lower arms, with a ball joint holding it at the top and another at the bottom. The upright turns around those two balls, so one pair of joints handles both the suspension movement and the steering. There's no separate steering block or kingpin.
The pivot balls are adjustable. You tighten them until the upright moves freely with no play, then leave them. On the SBX4, caster can be changed quickly with small shims on the top arms, so it's easy to make small adjustments at the track.
How a C-hub works
A C-hub is a C-shaped carrier fixed to the outer ends of the arms. Inside the "C", a steering block turns on kingpins. The C-hub moves with the suspension and the steering block turns inside it, so suspension and steering each have their own pivot.
Because the C-hub holds the kingpins, caster is built into the hub. The F8 takes this a step further. The Sparko 7075 Adjustable C Hub gives you 18°, 20° or 22° of caster from one set of hubs, and you change it by swapping the inserts.
Side by side
| Pivot ball (WIRC SBX4) | C-hub (Sparko F8) | |
|---|---|---|
| Steering pivot | Upper and lower pivot balls | Kingpins in the C-hub |
| Suspension pivot | Same pivot balls | Hinge pin through the C-hub |
| Caster set by | Shims on the top arms | C-hub (18/20/22° inserts on F8) |
| Free play | Adjusted at the pivot balls | Set by the pin and bushing fit |
How they feel on track
Driver preference plays a big part, and overall setup matters more than hub type alone. As a general guide, pivot ball cars give a smooth, free-moving front end with fewer parts in the corner. C-hub cars keep steering and suspension separate, which many drivers find gives a precise, planted steering feel. Both cars let you change caster at the track: with shims on the SBX4, or by swapping inserts on the F8.
Which should you choose?
Both designs are raced at the top level, so neither is the "wrong" choice.
Choose pivot ball (WIRC SBX4) if you like a simple, free-moving front end and fine-tuning caster with shims.
Choose C-hub (Sparko F8) if you want separate steering and suspension pivots and set caster positions you can swap between with inserts.
